What is reading fluency?
Reading fluency is the ability to read accurately, at a comfortable pace, and with natural expression. A fluent reader is not sounding out every word, so their attention is free to focus on meaning. That is why fluency matters so much: a child who reads haltingly uses all their energy decoding and has little left for comprehension.
Why some children read slowly
- They are still decoding many words letter by letter – so secure the phonics first.
- They are reading books that are too hard for them.
- They get too little reading practice.
- They have never heard fluent reading modelled aloud.
How to improve reading fluency at home
- Repeated reading: have your child read a short passage two or three times – it noticeably improves speed and confidence.
- Read at the right level: choose books where your child knows almost every word, so practice builds flow, not frustration.
- Model fluent reading: read a page aloud with expression, then let your child read it after you.
- Paired reading: read together, or take turns line by line.
- Use your finger or a bookmark to keep the place and steady the pace.
- Practise sight words so common words are read instantly, not sounded out.
