Reading Help for Struggling Readers in Grades 4–6

If your child has reached Grade 4, 5 or 6 and still finds reading a struggle, you are not alone — and it is not too late. Many South African children move into the Intermediate Phase with gaps from the Foundation Phase that were never filled, which makes reading slow, tiring and stressful. Why older children fall behind with reading

Reading is built in a specific order — letter sounds, blending, sight words, fluency, then comprehension. When one of the early steps is shaky, everything built on top of it wobbles. By Grade 4, children are expected to “read to learn” rather than “learn to read”, so a child who is still decoding struggles across every subject.
