The whole point of reading is understanding. A child can sound out every word on a page and still miss the story — which is why ‘reading for meaning’ is the real goal of the Foundation Phase.
Decoding — turning letters into sounds and words — is essential, but it is only half of reading. The PIRLS 2021 study measured reading for meaning, and South Africa’s results showed how many children can say the words without grasping the message.
Even with the simplest stories, talk about what is happening. Ask what your child thinks will happen next, how a character feels, and why. This habit turns word-reading into true comprehension.
The more words a child knows, the more they understand. Reading aloud, storytelling and everyday chat all grow the vocabulary that comprehension depends on.
