Here is how to build it at home.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is reading fluency?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reading fluency is the ability to read accurately, at a comfortable pace, and with natural expression. A fluent reader is not sounding out every word, so their attention is free to focus on meaning. That is why fluency matters so much: a child who reads haltingly uses all their energy decoding and has little left for comprehension.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why some children read slowly<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>They are still <strong>decoding<\/strong> many words letter by letter &#8211; so secure the phonics first.<\/li><li>They are reading books that are <strong>too hard<\/strong> for them.<\/li><li>They get too little reading practice.<\/li><li>They have never heard fluent reading modelled aloud.<\/li><\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to improve reading fluency at home<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Repeated reading:<\/strong> have your child read a short passage two or three times &#8211; it noticeably improves speed and confidence.<\/li><li><strong>Read at the right level:<\/strong> choose books where your child knows almost every word, so practice builds flow, not frustration.<\/li><li><strong>Model fluent reading:<\/strong> read a page aloud with expression, then let your child read it after you.<\/li><li><strong>Paired reading:<\/strong> read together, or take turns line by line.<\/li><li><strong>Use your finger or a bookmark<\/strong> to keep the place and steady the pace.<\/li><li><strong>Practise sight words<\/strong> so common words are read instantly, not sounded out.<\/li><\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Make it enjoyable<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Keep sessions short &#8211; ten minutes of relaxed reading beats a long, tense one.<\/li><li>Re-read favourite books; familiarity builds fluency.<\/li><li>Try reading a simple script or poem with expression, even funny voices.<\/li><li>Praise smooth, expressive reading, not just correct words.<\/li><\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When fluency does not improve<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your child is reading at the right level and practising regularly but fluency is still not growing, it is often a sign that earlier phonics skills need shoring up.
