There is no single &#8220;right&#8221; age; what matters is that a child shows the readiness signs, not that they hit a birthday.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When do children usually start reading?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In South Africa, children start Grade R at around five and Grade 1 at around six, which is when formal reading instruction begins under the CAPS curriculum. Some children read a little earlier and some a little later &#8211; both are completely normal. Development varies, and a child who reads at seven can easily become just as strong a reader as one who read at five.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Early reading milestones by age<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Ages 2 to 3:<\/strong> enjoys being read to, points at pictures, learns that books have a front and back.<\/li><li><strong>Ages 3 to 4:<\/strong> recognises some letters, hears rhymes, &#8220;pretend reads&#8221; familiar books.<\/li><li><strong>Ages 4 to 5 (Grade R):<\/strong> hears the first sound in words, recognises their name, knows several letter sounds.<\/li><li><strong>Ages 5 to 6 (Grade 1):<\/strong> blends sounds into words and reads simple sentences.<\/li><li><strong>Ages 6 to 7:<\/strong> reads short books with growing fluency and understanding.<\/li><\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Signs your child is ready to start reading<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>recognises and names several letters<\/li><li>can hear the first sound in a word<\/li><li>enjoys rhymes and can make rhyming words<\/li><li>shows interest in books and print<\/li><li>can sit and focus for a few minutes<\/li><li>recognises their own name<\/li><\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can you start too early?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You cannot start reading readiness too early &#8211; reading aloud, singing rhymes and playing sound games benefit children from babyhood. What can backfire is pushing <em>formal<\/em> reading drills on a child who is not developmentally ready, which can make reading feel stressful. Follow readiness signs, keep it playful, and let interest lead.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What if my child is older and not reading yet?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your child is six or seven and not yet reading, there is no need to panic &#8211; but it is worth giving them structured phonics practice rather than waiting.
