With the right, steady support at home, the vast majority catch up.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is it normal for a Grade 1 child not to read yet?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Children develop at different rates, and early in Grade 1 it is common for some not to be reading independently yet. What matters is the direction of travel: is your child slowly building letter sounds and blending, or stuck and losing confidence? If progress has stalled, that is your cue to step in with focused practice &#8211; not to panic.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why some Grade 1 children fall behind with reading<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>They have not yet secured their <strong>letter sounds<\/strong>.<\/li><li>They know sounds but cannot yet <strong>blend<\/strong> them into words.<\/li><li>They were taught letter <em>names<\/em> before letter <em>sounds<\/em>.<\/li><li>They are guessing from the first letter or the picture instead of decoding.<\/li><li>They have had too little daily reading practice.<\/li><\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to help your Grade 1 child read, step by step<\/h2>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Check the sounds.<\/strong> Can your child say the sound for each single letter? Reteach any that are shaky.<\/li><li><strong>Practise blending.<\/strong> Use simple words like <em>sat<\/em>, <em>pin<\/em>, <em>mop<\/em> &#8211; stretch the sounds, then push them together.<\/li><li><strong>Read decodable books<\/strong> that only use sounds your child knows, so they succeed on almost every word.<\/li><li><strong>Add sight words slowly<\/strong> &#8211; a few common words at a time.<\/li><li><strong>Keep sessions short and positive<\/strong> &#8211; ten minutes a day, always ending on a win.<\/li><\/ol>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What not to do<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Do not give harder books hoping they will &#8220;catch up&#8221; &#8211; it teaches children that reading is frustrating.<\/li><li>Do not let your child guess from pictures &#8211; guide them back to the sounds.<\/li><li>Do not compare them out loud to siblings or classmates.<\/li><\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When to seek extra reading support<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your child is making little progress despite steady, structured practice &#8211; or shows persistent trouble with rhyme, sounds and spelling well into the year &#8211; it is worth speaking to their teacher and, if needed, an educational psychologist.
