A <strong>Grade 1 readiness assessment<\/strong> checks whether your child has the language, early literacy, numeracy, motor and social-emotional skills they will need to cope \u2014 and thrive \u2014 in the Foundation Phase. This free, CAPS-aligned Grade 1 readiness assessment checklist for South African parents shows you exactly what to look for, at home, in about fifteen minutes.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is a Grade 1 readiness assessment?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Grade 1 readiness assessment (sometimes called a school readiness test) is a simple check of the skills a child is expected to have by the end of Grade R. It is not a pass-or-fail exam \u2014 it is a snapshot that shows where your child is strong and where they might need a little more practice before Grade 1 begins. In South Africa, readiness is measured against the CAPS Foundation Phase expectations, and it covers far more than just reading and writing.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When should you check Grade 1 readiness?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The best time is during the final term of Grade R \u2014 roughly September to December of the year before Grade 1. That leaves a few months to strengthen any gaps before school starts in January. If your child turns six by 30 June of their Grade 1 year they meet the age requirement, but age alone does not guarantee readiness, which is exactly why this checklist matters.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Grade 1 readiness assessment checklist<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Work through each area below with your child. For every skill, ask: can my child do this comfortably and on their own? A child who is ready will manage most of the items in each group.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Language and listening<\/h3>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>follows a two- or three-step instruction<\/li><li>speaks in full sentences and can be understood by others<\/li><li>listens to a short story and answers questions about it<\/li><li>knows their full name, age and where they live<\/li><\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Early literacy and phonics (reading readiness)<\/h3>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>recognises and names several letters<\/li><li>hears the first sound in a word (the &#8220;b&#8221; in <em>ball<\/em>)<\/li><li>claps or hears the syllables in a word<\/li><li>makes and hears rhyming words<\/li><li>holds a book the right way and turns the pages<\/li><li>shows interest in stories and printed words<\/li><\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Early numeracy<\/h3>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>counts to at least ten<\/li><li>recognises the numbers 1 to 10<\/li><li>sorts and matches objects by colour, shape or size<\/li><li>understands position words like on, under, in front and behind<\/li><\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fine motor skills<\/h3>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>holds a pencil or crayon with a comfortable grip<\/li><li>draws recognisable shapes and a simple person<\/li><li>cuts along a line with scissors<\/li><li>does up buttons and manages their own school bag<\/li><\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gross motor skills<\/h3>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>runs, jumps, hops and balances on one foot<\/li><li>throws and catches a ball<\/li><li>climbs and moves with coordination<\/li><\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Social and emotional readiness<\/h3>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>separates from you calmly<\/li><li>takes turns and shares with other children<\/li><li>can focus on a task for ten to fifteen minutes<\/li><li>asks for help when needed and copes with small setbacks<\/li><li>manages the toilet and basic self-care independently<\/li><\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to use your results<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is no score to add up. If your child manages most items in every area, they are well prepared for Grade 1. If one or two areas are shaky \u2014 very often early literacy or concentration \u2014 that is completely normal, and it is exactly what the months before Grade 1 are for. Focus your practice there.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What if your child is not ready to read?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reading readiness is the area parents worry about most. If your child is not yet hearing sounds in words or recognising letters, short daily phonics practice makes a big difference.
