Grade R is not about reading books yet \u2014 it is about getting ready to read. In South Africa’s CAPS curriculum, this ‘reception year’ builds the sounds, vocabulary and habits that make Grade 1 reading click.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
By the end of Grade R, CAPS expects a child to recognise many letter sounds, hear rhymes and beginning sounds in words, follow a story read aloud, and handle a book correctly \u2014 front to back, left to right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
None of this needs formal reading. It needs listening games, songs, stories and playful practice with letter sounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Phonological awareness \u2014 hearing that ‘sun’ starts with \/s\/ \u2014 is the single strongest predictor of how easily a child will learn to read. Organisations like Wordworks have shown how much this early language work matters for South African children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Vocabulary is the other giant. Children who are spoken to, sung to and read to daily arrive in Grade 1 with thousands more words to attach reading to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
