In South Africa’s CAPS curriculum, this ‘reception year’ builds the sounds, vocabulary and habits that make Grade 1 reading click.

What CAPS expects in Grade R

By the end of Grade R, CAPS expects a child to recognise many letter sounds, hear rhymes and beginning sounds in words, follow a story read aloud, and handle a book correctly — front to back, left to right.

None of this needs formal reading. It needs listening games, songs, stories and playful practice with letter sounds.

The skills that matter most

Phonological awareness — hearing that ‘sun’ starts with /s/ — is the single strongest predictor of how easily a child will learn to read. Organisations like Wordworks have shown how much this early language work matters for South African children.

Vocabulary is the other giant. Children who are spoken to, sung to and read to daily arrive in Grade 1 with thousands more words to attach reading to.

How to practise at home

Play ‘I spy with my little eye, something that starts with /m/’. Clap syllables in family names. Read a story every day and talk about it.

Our Grade R lessons turn exactly these readiness skills — pure letter sounds, listening and first blending — into short, playful daily practice.
