The Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) organises English Home Language into four skill areas that are taught together, not one after the other. These are Listening and Speaking, Phonics, Reading and Viewing, and Writing (including Handwriting). Roughly the biggest slice of Home Language time goes to reading and phonics, because these are the engine of everything else. Listening and speaking come first though \u2014 a child who can hear the difference between sounds and who has a rich spoken vocabulary finds reading much easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Before children read words, CAPS expects them to listen to stories, answer questions about them, follow instructions, and retell events in order. Your child will learn rhymes, songs and ‘news telling’, where they talk about their weekend or a picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
