Worried your child might not be ready for big school? Here are the real signs of school readiness \u2014 well beyond knowing the alphabet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In South Africa a child must turn seven in their Grade 1 year (they may start the year they turn six), but age alone does not tell you if a child is ready. Readiness is a mix of language, social, emotional and physical skills. If your child can follow simple instructions, separate from you calmly, hold a pencil, and show curiosity about letters and numbers, those are strong signs they are ready for Grade 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Many parents assume that being ready for Grade 1 means knowing the alphabet, counting to a hundred and writing their name. In reality, schools look at the whole child. Can they sit and focus for a short while? Can they share, take turns and cope when things do not go their way? These everyday skills matter as much as any letter or number.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Department of Basic Education places Grade R at the start of the Foundation Phase precisely to build this broad base. A child who has spent a year in a good Grade R programme has usually developed the listening, play and social habits that make Grade 1 far smoother \u2014 regardless of how much formal reading they can already do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Listen to how your child talks and listens. A Grade-1-ready child usually speaks in full sentences, can retell a simple story, follows a two-step instruction (‘fetch your shoes and put them by the door’), and enjoys being read to. These oral language skills are the foundation that reading is later built on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You do not need your child to be reading already. What helps is that they recognise that print carries meaning, can hear rhymes and beginning sounds in words, and know some letter sounds. If your child loves pointing out letters on road signs or shop names, that curiosity is exactly what you want to see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Big school is a big social step. A ready child can usually separate from a parent without lasting distress, ask an adult for help, and play cooperatively with other children. They can manage everyday routines like packing a bag, going to the toilet independently and eating a lunch without help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Emotional regulation matters too. Grade 1 brings frustration \u2014 work that is harder, friends who disagree, a teacher’s attention shared among thirty children. A child who can wait a turn, recover from a small setback and try again is set up to thrive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Fine-motor control underpins writing. Look for a child who can hold a crayon or pencil with a comfortable grip, cut roughly along a line with scissors, thread beads, do puzzles and build with blocks. These hand skills develop through play, drawing and everyday tasks like dressing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gross-motor skills matter for the school day too \u2014 running, jumping, balancing and climbing help a child sit upright at a desk, carry a bag and cope with a full, active day. Plenty of outdoor play is one of the best readiness activities there is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If you notice your child struggles to understand instructions, has very unclear speech for their age, cannot sit for even a few minutes, or becomes extremely distressed when separated from you, it is worth a chat with their Grade R teacher or clinic. Early support is far easier than catch-up later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Remember too that South Africa’s school year starts in January, so a child born late in the year may be among the youngest in the class. This is normal. Focus on your individual child’s development rather than comparing them to older classmates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
