A term-by-term guide to what South African children should be reading from Grade R to Grade 3, so you know if your child is on track.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
From Grade R to Grade 3, South African children move from hearing sounds to reading fluently for meaning. Grade R builds sound awareness and print interest, Grade 1 blends sounds into words and simple sentences, Grade 2 grows fluency and comprehension, and Grade 3 reads longer texts with understanding. Here are the CAPS milestones, term by term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Grade R is not about reading words yet \u2014 it is about the building blocks. Through the year your child should enjoy stories, recognise rhyme and rhythm, clap syllables in words, and begin to hear the first sound in a word (‘sun starts with sss’). This is called phonological awareness, and it is the strongest launch pad for Grade 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
By the end of Grade R, most children recognise many letters by sound, know that we read from left to right and top to bottom, can ‘read’ a familiar story from the pictures, and can write their own name. If your child is doing these things by the December holidays, they are well prepared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In Terms 1 and 2, children learn single letter sounds in a planned order and start blending them into short words like cat, big and top. They build a small bank of sight words and begin reading one-line, predictable sentences with the teacher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
By Terms 3 and 4, children read short, simple stories, meet common two-letter sounds such as ‘sh’ and ‘ch’, and answer basic questions about what they read. A realistic year-end goal is reading a few simple sentences aloud and understanding them. Reading speed still matters less than accuracy and meaning at this stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Grade 2 is the fluency year. In the first half, children read longer sentences and short paragraphs, tackle more complex sounds and word families, and start reading silently as well as aloud. Sight-word banks grow so reading becomes smoother and less effortful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
By the second half of Grade 2, a child on track reads a short story of several sentences with reasonable fluency, self-corrects some mistakes, and can retell the main events and answer ‘why’ questions. This is a critical checkpoint \u2014 Funda Wande and the 2030 Reading Panel both highlight Grade 2 as the year where gaps either close or widen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Grade 3 is the bridge from ‘learning to read’ to ‘reading to learn’. Children read longer texts across topics, read fluently enough that decoding no longer slows them down, and use reading to find information, not just to practise. Comprehension deepens: predicting, inferring and giving opinions about a text.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
By the end of Grade 3, a child on track reads age-appropriate stories independently and for enjoyment, understands what they read, and writes several connected sentences. Because Grade 4 switches many learners to English as the language of learning, being a confident reader by the end of Grade 3 is one of the most protective things for a South African child’s schooling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Milestones are a guide, not a verdict \u2014 children develop at different rates, and load-shedding, school disruptions and moving between languages all affect pace. But do not ‘wait and see’ for long. The PIRLS 2021 finding that 81% of Grade 4 learners could not read for meaning shows how quickly small early gaps compound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
