How older South African learners catch up on reading — and why going back to basics is the fastest way forward.

If your Grade 4, 5 or 6 child is battling to read, you are far from alone — and it is absolutely fixable. Older learners catch up faster than beginners, because their language and thinking are already strong.

Why the wheels come off in Grade 4

In Grade 4, textbooks replace readers and every subject assumes fluent reading. A child with quiet gaps in phonics suddenly faces Natural Science paragraphs they cannot decode. The problem looks new, but it usually started years earlier.

This is the exact gap PIRLS 2021 exposed: 81% of South African Grade 4 learners could not read for meaning.

Go back to go forward

The fastest fix is unglamorous: find the last phonics skill your child does confidently, and rebuild from there. Older children move through early material quickly — what took a Grade 1 a term can take a Grade 5 a fortnight.

Protect their dignity. Frame it as ‘reading gym’, keep sessions private and short, and praise effort loudly.

A purpose-built catch-up track

Our Reading Booster was built for exactly this: a reading-intervention track for Grades 4–6 that rebuilds decoding fast, then bridges into the subject-style texts school demands — Natural Science, History and Geography passages included.

Key takeaways

<circle cx="12" cy="12" r="10"></circle>Grade 4 struggles usually come from earlier phonics gaps — and they are fixable.

<circle cx="12" cy="12" r="10"></circle>Older learners catch up fast: rebuild from the last confident skill.

<circle cx="12" cy="12" r="10"></circle>Keep sessions short and private, and praise effort to protect confidence.

References & further reading

PIRLS 2021 — South Africa results

2030 Reading Panel — the state of reading in South Africa

Funda Wande — teaching reading for meaning in South Africa

External sources open in a new tab.
