A school readiness assessment is a structured check of whether a child has the developmental skills to cope with Grade 1. In South Africa it usually looks at language, perception, fine- and gross-motor coordination, concentration, and social-emotional maturity. It can be done by a Grade R teacher, an educational psychologist or an occupational therapist, and it is meant to guide support \u2014 not to label a child as ‘behind’.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Most assessments cover a similar set of areas: receptive and expressive language (understanding and using words), visual and auditory perception (noticing detail and hearing differences in sounds), fine- and gross-motor coordination, concentration and memory, and emotional and social maturity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Timing matters because the South African school year starts in January. Assessments are typically done in the second half of the year before Grade 1, giving time to act on any findings.
