For most South African Grade 1 children, reading homework is short: about ten to fifteen minutes a day, usually reading a levelled book or reader sent home from school, plus a little phonics or sight-word practice. The aim is a happy daily habit, not a heavy workload. Here is what is realistic and how to make those minutes count.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
CAPS does not prescribe a fixed number of homework minutes, but the widely accepted guideline in the Foundation Phase is little and often. For Grade 1, roughly ten to fifteen minutes of reading-related homework on school days is normal and plenty. Anything much longer usually tips a six- or seven-year-old into frustration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In practice this means one main thing: reading. Most schools send home a levelled reader or a home reading book, plus perhaps a short list of sounds or sight words to practise. Some add a phonics or handwriting page. If your school sends very little, that is not necessarily neglect \u2014 but it does mean home reading matters even more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The purpose of Grade 1 reading homework is to build a daily reading habit and to give your child a chance to read to a caring adult. Ten focused, calm minutes with you paying full attention beats thirty distracted minutes with the TV on. Sit close, put phones away, and make it a warm one-on-one moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Re-reading the same book on consecutive nights is not lazy \u2014 it is one of the best ways to build fluency. Your child already knows the words, so they get the powerful experience of reading smoothly and successfully. Confidence grows from that feeling of ‘I can read this’.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Keep a consistent time and place \u2014 many families find just after supper or before bath works. Say pure letter sounds when your child gets stuck (\/s\/ not ‘suh’), give them a few seconds to try, and only supply a word if they are genuinely stuck. Then have them re-read the whole sentence so it makes sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Always end with a question or two about the story: what happened, what might happen next, how a character feels. This keeps the focus on meaning, which is the real goal. Praise effort and trying, not speed or perfection \u2014 a child who feels successful comes back willingly tomorrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
South African home life is busy, and load-shedding, long commutes and toddlers underfoot all get in the way. Reading homework does not need electricity \u2014 a printed reader and a candle or torch work fine during load-shedding, and a physical book never buffers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If evenings are impossible, ten minutes in the morning or over weekends is far better than nothing. If you cannot always be there, an older sibling, a grandparent, or a short interactive lesson with audio support can stand in. Be gently concerned if reading homework consistently ends in tears, takes far longer than fifteen minutes because your child cannot manage the book, or your child is guessing every word from the picture. These suggest the book is too hard or a skill gap has opened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Talk to the teacher \u2014 ask whether the reader is at the right level and how your child is doing in class. In the meantime, drop back to easier books so success comes often, and add short daily phonics practice.
